On November 8, 2025, at approximately 7:18 a.m., a California Highway Patrol officer was conducting traffic enforcement on southbound U.S. Highway 101 near Wilson Creek. The officer observed a red Mazda Miata traveling northbound at approximately 76 miles per hour in a posted 55 mph zone. A radar reading confirmed the speed, and a traffic stop was initiated just south of Wilson Creek. The officer reported observing objective signs of alcohol impairment, including red and watery eyes, slurred speech, rapid movements, unsteady gait, and the odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from the driver’s breath and person. The driver stated she had consumed “one beer and a couple glasses of wine at midnight” prior to driving. Field sobriety tests were conducted. According to the report, the driver displayed lack of smooth pursuit and sustained nystagmus during the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. During the Walk and Turn test, she missed heel-to-toe contact, stepped off line, raised her arms for balance, and failed to properly count steps. During the Modified Romberg test, she swayed side to side and misjudged the passage of time. Preliminary BAC Results: 7:50 AM — 0.093% 7:54 AM — 0.091% The driver later consented to a chemical blood test at Sutter Coast Hospital. The driver was placed under arrest and transported to the Del Norte County Jail. Charges listed in the arrest report include: • CVC 23152(a) — Driving under the influence of alcohol • CVC 23152(b) — Driving with a BAC of 0.08% or greater All individuals are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
