On 5 May 2008, two weeks after Fred Engel walked to the mailboxes at the end of his street in Carolina Forest, South Carolina, and did not come home, detectives from Horry County sat down in Kentucky with Timmy Rogers. They told him the dead man's wife, Sherry Engel, was talking to another team across the street. This is that recording, and hers. Court record: State v. Rogers, 405 S.C. 554 (S.C. Court of Appeals, 2013). Sentencing report: WMBF News, 8 December 2010. Prosecutor's statement after the verdict: video by Michael Smith, Carolina Forest Chronicle, 14 October 2010 (short excerpt, credited on screen). Booking photographs: J. Reuben Long Detention Center, via WMBF. Aerial imagery: Google Earth (recent imagery; the street and the motel as they are today, no house is marked). Music and sound design: original, produced for this film. The recordings are real and nothing said in them has been altered. They are shortened and arranged by subject; every jump in the recording is marked on screen. The phone record, the arrest warrant and the page of the appeal opinion are typeset from the court record and from the recording, and are labelled. The detective's sketch is a redrawing and is labelled. Four night images (a mailbox station, a pair of glasses on the ground, a stand of pines, a phone on a table) and one faceless shadow figure are reconstructions made for this film; each is labelled RECONSTRUCTION on screen and none shows the real place, object or person. Positions drawn on the aerial of the street are approximate. No person's likeness was generated and no vehicle is depicted. Narration is a synthetic voice reading our script. Timmy Rogers has always denied killing Fred Engel. What the courts decided is at the end of the film. The Denial Tapes: the tape, with the record beside it. Subscribe for the next tape.
