On June 1, 2024, at approximately 3:10 a.m., Police Officers Daniela Simone and Shawn Sodora were in the area of Newark and Hudson Streets when they saw a car driving the wrong way on a one-way road. They pulled the vehicle over, and when they approached the driver, later identified as 23-year-old Joseph Orsita of Bloomfield, the odor of an alcoholic beverage was emanating from his breath, he had bloodshot eyes, and his speech was slow. When asked, he gave officers an old version of his paperwork. A standard field sobriety test was performed, after which Orsita was arrested for driving while intoxicated and transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters, where he refused to take a breath test. He was issued a summons for refusal to provide breath samples, refusing to take a breath test, driving while intoxicated, and driving the wrong way on a one-way street. As per John’s Law, he was released into the custody of a responsible party. These charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. An arrest is not a finding of guilt: that’s something for a court to decide.
