WAUKEGAN, IL - On January 7th, 2020 at 3:43PM, Waukegan Police were called to a traffic accident at the intersection of W. Glen Flora Ave and Jackson Street. Upon arrival, the victim of the crash states that the suspect took too wide of a turn and struck their vehicle. The investigating officer approached the suspect and observed an odor of alcohol coming from the driver's vehicle. He then called another officer to help investigate a possibly impaired driver. Upon arrival, the second officer asked the suspect to step out of the vehicle. As the suspect stepped out, he used the door for balance. Once on the sidewalk, the suspect admitted to drinking and began a field sobriety test (FST). The suspect struggled to stand upright and needed to be supported by the second officer while performing the horizontal gaze nystagmus test. At the beginning of the Romberg test, the suspect tilted his head back and began to fall yet again. At this point, the officer decided to no longer administer the FST. The suspect was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) and charged with improper lane usage. Following the arrest, the suspect was taken to the Waukegan Police Department for further processing.
