On February 6, 2026, a California Highway Patrol sergeant was stopped at a red light near Gage Avenue and Vermont Avenue in Los Angeles when a purple Nissan Altima allegedly drifted into the path of his marked CHP patrol vehicle. The officer activated his emergency lights and stopped the Nissan on Gage Avenue. The officers reported signs of possible impairment, including red and watery eyes, slow and slurred speech, and the odor of an alcoholic beverage. The driver told officers she had been up for 18 hours and was driving home. When asked what she had been drinking, she reportedly said, “Not much.” CHP also reported that her driver’s license was suspended. During field sobriety testing, officers reported 6 out of 6 clues on the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test and 3 out of 4 clues on the One Leg Stand. The Walk and Turn test was not completed due to the driver’s level of intoxication and safety concerns. The driver declined the preliminary alcohol screening test at the scene. After being arrested and transported to the CHP Central Los Angeles Area office, the driver provided two breath samples of 0.342% and 0.343% BAC. A 0.343% BAC is approximately 4.3 times the California legal limit of 0.08%. The driver was cited and released to her mother. Her recommended charges were: 14601.1(A) - Drive While License Suspended 23152(A) - DUI Alcohol/Drugs 23152(B) - DUI Alcohol W/BAC above .08 23578 - Excessive Blood Alcohol California Highway Patrol officers involved: Officer C.
