A police officer on patrol in the early morning hours spotted a white sedan struggling to maintain its lane on the eastbound interstate. Upon pulling the vehicle over, the officer immediately detected a strong odor of alcohol and noted that the driver exhibited glassy eyes and heavily slurred speech. The driver initially claimed to have only consumed a few glasses of wine earlier in the day but struggled significantly with standard field sobriety tests. During the evaluation, the driver swayed, hopped, and nearly fell over, prompting the officer to halt the physical tests for safety reasons. Following the arrest for operating a vehicle under the influence, a vehicle inventory search uncovered an almost empty bottle of vodka on the passenger side floorboard. The suspect was transported to the police department where a preliminary breath sample yielded a notably high result of .295 before they ultimately refused further testing. The driver was cited for multiple offenses and evaluated by medical personnel before being released. These charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. An arrest is not a finding of guilt: that’s something for a court to decide.
