-San Antonio, TX. -August 30, 2023. One man is dead and an officer is in the hospital following a shooting in the parking lot of a Westside Home Depot on Wednesday night, August 30, San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said during a press conference. Detectives with SAPD property crimes unit had reportedly been tracking two individuals suspected of being involved in vehicle burglaries driving in a stolen vehicle throughout the day. Officers were led to the Home Depot located in the 600 block of SW Loop 410 and Woodstone. Around 9:40 p.m., officers attempted to stop the vehicle in the parking lot when the armed driver ran from authorities, McManus said. From there, an officer was shot and the person being tracked was shot and killed by police. The officer was taken to the hospital and was headed into surgery at the time of the press conference. Meanwhile, the passenger of the vehicle, who was said to be in his 20s, was arrested, according to McManus. The suspected car burglars being tracked by detectives had multiple charges between the two of them, including vehicle burglary and narcotics. However, the charges were dismissed and no jail time was served, McManus said. "I'm on the street here making arrests when there is probable cause to make arrests who have committed crimes. Some of them are very dangerous people who are out and should be in jail. If you commit a violent crime, you should be in jail. If you are a habitual offender, you need to be in jail. That's a danger to the community when that doesn't happen," McManus said. This was the second officer-involved shooting that day when the police's street crimes detectives were reportedly tracking a man with a "violent history." The person of interest, who was out on multiple warrants, noticed police and crashed his car into a police vehicle. He then left the car and started shooting at other vehicles on the highway in an attempt to steal their cars. Police officers shot and killed him. The incident shut down lanes near IH-35 and S. New Braunfels Avenue for several hours, according to police.
