On June 30, 2024, Deputy Watson of the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on a white 2-door sedan. As the vehicle came to a stop, a male passenger jumped out the vehicle and fled on foot. Deputy Watson proceeded after the fleeing male while Deputy Olivas detained the driver and backseat passenger of the vehicle. Shortly after, Deputy Olivas was unable to contact Deputy Watson via radio and began searching the area for him. Deputy Watson has caught up to the 46-year-old man and a fight ensued. Deputy Watson eventually deplored his Taser on the man in order to end the fight. Deputy Watson sustained injuries to his face and complained that he was light-headed and unable to stand on his own. The driver and the female passenger were eventually released from the scene. Deputy Watson was transported by EMS personnel to a local hospital due to his injuries. Deputy Watson was found to have abrasions on his face, head, arms, and knees. The man who attempted to run was transported to hospital for medical clearance and was eventually booked into Santa Fe County Adult Detention on the charges of Aggravated Battery Upon a Peace Officer, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Resisting, Evading, or Obstructing an Officer (2 counts). On August 28, 2024, ALL charges were DISMISSED by the prosecutor without prejudice. The suspect has been arrested numerous times since this incident.
