On April 17, 2025, at approximately 9:15 p.m., a Newport Beach police officer initiated a traffic stop on West Coast Highway after motorcyclist Jeffrey Cheyam Sterling ran a red light at Superior Avenue. Bodycam and dashcam footage shows the officer approaching Sterling, who refused commands to sit down. Instead, Sterling advanced, attacked the officer, and a physical altercation ensued. During the fight, Sterling struck the officer multiple times in the head and grabbed the officer’s taser, placing it against the officer’s head. The officer broke free, and moments later, an officer-involved shooting occurred. Backup arrived quickly, and medical aid was administered. The Newport Beach Fire Department transported Sterling to a hospital, where he later died. The officer was treated for injuries and released. A civilian ride-along remained unharmed in the patrol car. The California Department of Justice is conducting an independent investigation.
