On August 3, 2024, at approximately 10:25 AM, an officer of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission was conducting a forest patrol in Blackwater River State Forest, Santa Rosa County, when dispatch issued a complaint regarding a camper with a disorderly and expanding campsite at the Indian Ford Primitive Area. At approximately 10:50 AM, the officer arrived at the campsite and observed a male camper lying inside an open tent. The officer announced their presence and noted that the camper was in possession of alcoholic beverages, specifically Busch Light Beer, despite posted signs prohibiting alcohol in the area. The campsite was littered with various cans and plastic bottles, and the camper had used a freshly cut Juniper tree to support the tent. Additionally, freshly cut palm fronds were being constructed into a mat. An axe and a saw were present at the site, and the camper admitted to cutting the tree from a nearby location, which is prohibited in the forest. An unrestrained dog was also present at the campsite. While the officer suspected the dog belonged to the camper, the camper claimed it was not theirs. A computer check through dispatch revealed that the camper had a civil arrest order for failure to pay child support in a nearby county. At approximately 11:20 AM, the officer arrested the camper on the warrant. At the camper's request, the officer contacted a family member via the agency-issued cell phone. The camper explained the situation to the family member, who agreed to retrieve their property from the campsite. Another officer arrived on scene to secure the unrestrained dog, which was later turned over to animal control. The second officer remained at the campsite to await the family member’s arrival. The camper was transported to the local jail, where they were booked for the out-of-county warrant. They were also issued citations for possession of alcoholic beverages in a restricted area, littering less than 15 pounds, and cutting trees and plants in a state forest. The camper was turned over to the jail without incident. After completing the booking process, the first officer returned to the campsite to relieve the second officer. At approximately 3:10 PM, the camper’s family member arrived at the site and took possession of the property.
