At approximately 11:30 PM on April 26, 2025, officers from the Johnston Police Department responded to a report of a possible disturbance at the Shell gas station located at 1396 Hartford Avenue. The call, made by a third party, described a potential argument between a male and a female in the parking lot. When officers arrived, they found the individuals matching the caller’s description. The male was alone in the driver’s seat of a white Nissan Sentra, which was parked facing Hartford Avenue. As one of the officers approached the vehicle, the driver suddenly accelerated, striking the officer. In response, the officer discharged his service weapon, firing several rounds at the driver. The Sentra continued traveling northbound on Hartford Avenue and eventually came to a stop after hitting a pylon in front of a business at 1369 Hartford Avenue. Officers provided immediate medical aid to the 28-year-old male driver, who was then transported to Rhode Island Hospital. He had been shot by the officer but is expected to survive.
