How 26 Men Survived the World’s Deadliest Pirates for Over 4 Years In the first episode of The Negotiators, Les, a seasoned kidnap negotiator, recounts the harrowing multi-year effort to secure the release of the Nahm 3, a fishing vessel hijacked by Somali pirates with 29 crew members from developing countries. With no insurance, government support, or ransom funding, the crew was abandoned in dire conditions. Les formed a crisis management team and relied on charities, local intermediaries, and delicate negotiations with pirate representatives to keep the hostages alive and secure a release. Despite manipulation, threats, and psychological tactics from the pirates, the team maintained pressure, built trust with local clan leaders, and eventually coordinated a successful ransom drop and rescue mission in 2015. The crew was freed after more than four years in captivity—a moment Les describes as the most meaningful achievement of his life.
