The incident occurred on February 14, 2025, when officers had two separate encounters with the suspect throughout the day. The first encounter followed a single-car accident involving Connor Darpino, 34, of Wayne. At the scene, Darpino reportedly became "argumentative and combative" with responding officers. As a result, he was arrested by Wayne Police, charged on a summons complaint, and later released. That night, a 911 call reported a man who had allegedly taken 20 Xanax pills. The man was identified as Connor Darpino. When police arrived at his residence, he appeared on the second floor, wielding a sword in each hand. According to the Prosecutor’s statement, he threatened to jump from the interior balcony of the two-story home and stab the officers. Darpino then retreated into an upstairs bedroom while officers secured the perimeter and requested additional support, treating the situation as a potential barricade scenario. Shortly after, Darpino re-emerged, still armed with both swords. This time, he advanced aggressively down the stairs toward the officers, weapons raised. Despite repeated verbal commands to drop the swords, he continued his approach at a fast pace. One officer fired his service weapon seven times, striking Darpino five times. Wayne Police immediately administered aid, and Darpino was transported to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center for treatment.
