🚨 Hostage & Barricade Incident — Senath, Missouri (Jan. 28–29, 2024) Senath Police were called to investigate an assault reported on January 28, 2024. The victim reported being lured to an apartment on Highfill Street, where they were assaulted by Kenneth Lee Canday and another suspect. According to statements, the victim was restrained, choked, threatened, and cut with a heated knife. The suspects also took the victim’s phone and made threats toward the victim and witnesses. The following day, January 29, officers from the Senath, Cardwell, and Hornersville Police Departments attempted to locate Canday at a residence on Church Lane. When officers arrived, they learned Canday was inside the home, reportedly armed, and refusing to come out. Officers also learned two women were inside with him. Canday made repeated threats toward officers and anyone who tried to enter. Negotiators from the Dunklin County Sheriff’s Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol worked for several hours to communicate with him. One of the women was eventually released and informed officers that Canday had a BB gun and two sword‑type weapons. As negotiations continued, Canday barricaded the door and refused to surrender. A SWAT team (Sikeston Department of Public Safety's Special Operations Group) was requested due to the risk to the remaining hostage and officers. After power to the residence was safely disconnected and negotiations stalled, the SWAT team made entry at approximately 11:20 PM. Officers breached the home and located Canday and the remaining hostage in the bathroom. Canday was taken into custody without injury, and the hostage was safely removed. Canday was transported to the Dunklin County Detention Center to await charges related to the assault, kidnapping, and threats reported the previous day. Allegations & Charges: Kidnapping Assault Robbery Unlawful Use of a Weapon Armed Criminal Action Sentencing information included within the video. In 2025, Officer Franklin was killed in the line of duty while serving a warrant with his tactical team in Mississippi County, Missouri, during a homicide investigation. As officers approached the suspect’s home, the man opened fire from inside, fatally wounding Officer Franklin and continuing to shoot before barricading himself for several hours. The suspect was later found deceased from a self‑inflicted gunshot wound. Officer Franklin was a National Guard veteran and had served more than 12 years with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety in roles that included the Special Operations Group, the Southeast Missouri Homeland Security Response Team, and the Sikeston DPS Honor Guard. He also served as a School Resource Officer and was most proud of his role as K9 handler for his loyal partner, Odin. Officer Franklin is survived by his wife, four children, and a loving family. This video is shared with respect for his service and in memory of his sacrifice.
