This started in Centralia, Illinois, when Aron Flanagan stopped near the 13th Street railroad crossing with his daughter after they found a man lying near the roadway. They called 911 and stayed there to help until police arrived. Then Officer Billy White showed up and asked Flanagan for his ID. Flanagan said he didn't have one and questioned why he needed to identify himself. What followed was a police encounter that ended with Flanagan in handcuffs for obstruction. The bodycam caught the entire exchange, including Flanagan telling the officer that he was only trying to help and questioning the arrest. Afterward, Flanagan filed a complaint and later took the case to federal court. The court allowed his Fourth Amendment false arrest claim to move forward. White was also suspended for five days, removed from his field training position, and ordered to complete additional training. The lawsuit eventually ended in a private settlement. No verified public record of the settlement amount was found. White had also previously received a one day suspension after a separate patrol car crash involving a Centralia High School student. This case raises some serious questions about police, law enforcement, bodycam footage, constitutional rights, know your rights, the Fourth Amendment, First Amendment protections, police accountability, cop watch and audit, and what can happen during a police encounter in the USA.
