On March 7, 2025, at 12:08 p.m., Bismarck Police Officers Matthew James and Nathan Anderson responded to a 911 text reporting a possibly intoxicated woman behind the wheel of a white Chevy Traverse in the 1100 block of 12th Street. The caller feared for his safety and believed the woman — later identified as 53-year-old Melanie Udell — was escalating and might attempt to run him over. Bodycam footage shows Officer James calmly speaking with Udell for over six minutes before the situation took a violent turn. The odor of marijuana and alcohol coming from the vehicle prompted officers to request she step out for further investigation. Instead, Udell refused, started the engine, and suddenly accelerated — deliberately ramming Officer James with her SUV. The impact violently launched Officer James over a snowbank and into a fence. His firearm was knocked from his hand, and he sustained serious injuries. As the vehicle prepared to strike again, Officer Anderson responded with deadly force, stopping the threat. Udell was shot and later pronounced dead at the hospital.
