It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: On July 5, 2023, around 12:55 PM, Officer Nicola Costagliola patrolled in plain clothes near 10th Avenue and Atkins Avenue for the Neptune Township Police Department. He spotted a 2005 Nissan weaving wildly down the road. As officers trailed the car, the driver sped up fast. Tires screamed against the pavement. The driver swung into a sloppy turn onto 7th Avenue. Sergeant Letsch flipped on his emergency lights for a stop. Officer Costagliola approached the driver, Marcie. While talking to her, he smelled alcohol. He saw signs of drunkenness too. Officers suspected she was impaired. They asked Marcie to step out and do sobriety tests. First came the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. Marcie wouldn't play along. Next, the Walk and Turn. She missed heel-to-toe steps. Her turn was all wrong. Last, the One Leg Stand. Marcie didn't lift her foot right. She dropped it too soon. Erratic driving, booze smell, and botched tests sealed it. Officer Costagliola arrested Marcie for DUI. They impounded her car under John's Law for 12 hours. A quick search later found an open alcohol bottle inside. Officer Benites showed up to handle the search. He took Marcie to the station for booking. At the station, officers read her the standard statement for drivers. Marcie first said yes to breath tests. But she refused the Alcotest. That earned her a refusal charge. After processing, they drove her to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for checks. Officer Costagliola handed her tickets: DUI, refusal to test, reckless driving, lane markings violation, no seatbelt, open container.
