🎥 In today's copyrighted documentary, we report on the night in November 2025 when a routine BCSO traffic stop in Albuquerque's notorious "War Zone" neighborhood escalated into an officer-involved altercation — and led to state and federal charges carrying a potential life sentence. On the afternoon of November 12, 2025, Bernalillo County Sheriff's deputies were on patrol in an area of Albuquerque commonly known as the "War Zone" — a stretch of the Central Avenue corridor that is suffering a wave of crime. What began as a routine traffic stop near Central Avenue and Wisconsin Street escalated quickly when deputies ran the plates on a pickup truck and identified the driver as operating with an invalid registration. The driver, speaking openly with deputies, told them he had received a DWI charge three years earlier and said he was driving to and from a new job because he needed work in order to qualify for an ignition interlock device. While processing the driver, deputies ran the passenger's identification and received a "29" — code for a wanted fugitive. Court records show the passenger, identified as Jason Baca, had an outstanding felony warrant at the time of the encounter. Deputies called for backup, and once additional units arrived, attempted to take Baca into custody. As deputies moved in, the situation rapidly deteriorated. According to the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office and the bodycam videos, deputies responded after Baca produced a handgun. Deputies immediately began life-saving measures, applying a tourniquet and chest seals while coordinating with arriving paramedics for a scoop-and-run transport to the hospital. As a result of these quick actions, Baca survived his injuries. Jason Baca has a long criminal record at the state level. But he’s been released back on the streets every time. This led to the Sheriff saying this incident was brought about by New Mexico’s “Catch and Release” culture. For this reason, federal prosecutors have stepped in and charged Baca under federal laws, where he now faces a potential life sentence. At the state level, prosecutors charged Baca with felony possession of a firearm by a felon, three counts of trafficking a controlled substance, and four counts of aggravated assault upon a peace officer with a deadly weapon. Federal prosecutors filed parallel charges of felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, and assault on a federal officer, as the deputies were working on a federal anti-crime task force. Jason Baca is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. The full story is in the documentary.
