It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: At around 12:20 AM on January 19, 2025, Officer Forcenito and Sergeant Desiato from the Westfield Police Department were dealing with another traffic stop near West North Avenue and Clark Street. During their patrol, they saw a 2017 Jeep driving along the shoulder. The officer turned on his emergency lights and pulled the vehicle over on Parks Road. Sergeant Desiato ordered the driver to stop, and after the driver pounded his fist on the hood of the car, he finally pulled over. As he approached Dawn, Sergeant Desiato smelled alcohol on her breath. She said she was coming from the Riverside Inn, a bar in Cranford, and admitted she had been drinking earlier that evening. Sensing she might be impaired, the officers asked her to step out of the vehicle and perform field sobriety tests. When Officers Swiderski and Sharfetz arrived to help, Dawn was asked to do several exercises. The first test was reciting the alphabet from “B” to “Y.” Despite her background as a teacher, she was unable to do it correctly. Next, she was asked to do the Walk and Turn test. During this, she failed to touch her heel to her toe and didn’t keep her arms at her sides. The third test was the One Leg Stand, and she couldn’t raise her foot properly. She put it down before the test was finished. The last test was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN). Officer Swiderski observed her eyes showing signs of impairment, with Nystagmus starting before 45 degrees and jerking as she looked sideways. Due to her shaky driving, the smell of alcohol, and her poor results on the sobriety tests, Officer Swiderski decided to arrest Dawn for driving under the influence. Her car was towed and held for 12 hours, following John’s Law. The officers took her back to the police station for more questioning. Dawn was read her rights as a motorist but refused to give a breath sample. After processing her, she was left with a sober adult who signed a form warning about her potential liability. She was scheduled for court once her case was handled. Officer Swiderski then issued several tickets.
