On the night of March 26, 2023, two young women who had once been close friends ran into each other at a carryout store on Emporium Square in northeast Columbus, Ohio. The argument started inside. It finished in the parking lot, in front of a crowd, and somebody filmed it on a phone. Columbus police were called at about 11:48 p.m. Officers found 17-year-old Halia Culbertson with a stab wound. She was taken to OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital and died shortly after midnight on March 27. Bryanna Barozzini, who was 18, had already left. Detectives found her at her home in Westerville and sat her down in an interview room at 7:19 that morning. She told them she had tried to walk away from the two girls who were running their mouths at her, and she acknowledged that she had a knife and that she swung it. She was charged with murder, which in Ohio carries fifteen years to life. In June 2024, days before jury selection, she pleaded guilty instead to involuntary manslaughter as a felony of the third degree. That changed everything. A felony three carries a maximum of three years. On July 11, 2024, Judge Mark Serrott of the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas gave her three years, which was the most the plea agreement left available to him. What happened in the seconds before the stabbing is genuinely disputed and this video does not resolve it. Her attorney told the court that on the surveillance video he counted no less than thirty steps his client took backwards, and fifteen more after she took a knife out of her pocket, and argued that she was afraid. Prosecutors argued that whatever happened first, answering a fistfight with a knife was an escalation that nothing justified. Halia's family did not accept the outcome. Her mother, her sister and her friends spoke for more than an hour, and a letter written in Halia's own voice was read aloud in the courtroom. UPDATE, from the state record: the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction lists Bryanna J. Barozzini, inmate W113508, admitted to the Ohio Reformatory for Women on July 17, 2024, with a current status of RELEASED - Judicial Release. Her expected release date had been June 23, 2027. Franklin County Court of Common Pleas case 23CR1730. Footage in this video: Columbus Division of Police Axon body-worn and fleet camera, a Columbus police interview room recording, bystander cellphone video, and Franklin County Court of Common Pleas hearing video. Court and custody information from Franklin County Court of Common Pleas records and the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction offender database.
