It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: On October 27, 2024, at about 9:56 PM, three officers from the Palisades Park Police Department—Michael Bruno, Chang Han, and Theodore Christolias—wrapped up another call on East Palisades Boulevard. As Christolias crossed the road to reach his patrol car, a white 2020 Hyundai Tucson swerved over the double yellow lines. The driver almost hit him. Christolias jumped into his car right away. He pulled the Hyundai over at 7th Street and East Palisades Boulevard. He approached the driver, a 26-year-old man named Jay Lee. While talking to him, Christolias smelled alcohol. He also spotted signs of being drunk. Jay said he hadn't drunk any booze. Suspecting trouble, Christolias told him to step out and do some sobriety tests. First came the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. Christolias saw jerky eye movements: no smooth tracking, strong shakes at the edge, and starts before 45 degrees. Next, the Walk and Turn test. Jay missed heel-to-toe steps. He took the wrong count and turned badly. Last, the One Leg Stand test. Jay didn't lift his foot right. He dropped it too soon. Those clues, plus the alcohol smell and poor test results, led to Jay's arrest for drunk driving. Police towed his car for a 12-hour hold under John's Law. Christolias drove him to the Leonia Police Department for more steps. They read the standard rights for drivers. Jay agreed to give breath samples. After watching him for 20 minutes, they tested. His blood alcohol level hit 0.12%, over the 0.08% limit. Once done, they took him back to Palisades Park for final paperwork. They issued tickets and let him go to a friend. This was after signing a liability warning. He awaited court. Christolias gave him these tickets: Driving drunk (39:4-50) Careless driving (39:4-97) Not yielding to a pedestrian (39:4-36) Unregistered vehicle (39:3-4) Wrong lane use (39:4-88) In court on March 6, 2025, Jay got convicted of drunk driving. The careless charge dropped to disobeying a traffic sign (39:4-120.9). For the guilty verdict, he installed an ignition lock for three months. He spent 12 hours in a drunk driver class. Fines totaled $930. The other three tickets vanished in the deal. If you enjoyed this BodyCamBust video.
