Los Angeles, California – July 13, 2025: Around 9:10 a.m., officers from the LAPD’s Central Patrol Division responded to reports of a man threatening pedestrians with a large blade near South Figueroa Street and West Olympic Boulevard. According to the call, the suspect had stopped his car in the middle of the intersection, exited the vehicle, and began swinging a sword-like weapon at people nearby. When officers arrived, they saw the suspect—later identified as 36-year-old Gurpreet Singh—standing in the intersection holding a machete. Officers gave multiple commands for him to drop the weapon, but he did not comply. Singh then returned to his vehicle, retrieved a water bottle, and threw it at officers before fleeing southbound on Figueroa Street while waving the machete out the driver’s side window. A brief pursuit followed, during which Singh drove recklessly and collided with a police vehicle. He eventually stopped near Figueroa Street and 12th Street, exited the vehicle still holding the machete, and advanced toward officers. During the confrontation, officers took action to stop the threat. Emergency medical personnel responded quickly, and Singh was transported to a local hospital for treatment. A two-foot-long machete was recovered at the scene and booked as evidence. Fortunately, no officers or members of the public were injured during the incident.
