On May 21, 2023, around 6:17 PM, Patrolman Robert Alvator of the Highlands Police Department in Highlands, New Jersey, observed a 2009 Dodge Caliber driving erratically on SR 36 northbound. The vehicle was swerving and following too closely, prompting Alvator to initiate a traffic stop near Orchard Street and SR 36. The driver, 20-year-old Karina Armando, admitted to consuming alcohol earlier that day. After Patrolwoman Nicole Curley arrived to assist, officers noted Armando's age and suspected impairment, leading them to request field sobriety exercises. During this segment of the encounter, Karina Armando directly asks officers what is happening. The officer then informs Armando of the decision to take her into custody based on her driving, statements, and performance during the field sobriety exercises, capturing her immediate emotional reaction to the news.
