On July 9th, deputies responded to a Dunkin’ Donuts after a woman called police claiming an employee had spit in her food. When officers arrived, workers reported that she had already been asked to leave but refused, insisting that the surveillance video be reviewed and continuing to argue inside the business. Deputies checked the store’s footage and found nothing to support her claim. Even after being told she needed to leave the property, she continued causing a disturbance outside. She was then detained for trespassing and taken into custody. After deputies transported her to the county jail, she was processed on a misdemeanor charge and later appeared before a judge, who allowed her to be released without posting bond. Over time, however, the case grew more complicated. She appeared in court multiple times, and following another incident during the course of her proceedings, her release was revoked and she was brought back into custody. As the case moved forward, the court questioned whether she was capable of participating in the legal process. A mental-health evaluation was ordered, and the findings led the court to rule that she was not competent to continue in the standard criminal system. Her case was reassigned to a specialized mental-health division, where it remains active today.
