On February 28, 2025, William Storrs — a 36-year-old resident of Newark, New York, who had served as both treasurer and elected chief of the Marbletown Volunteer Fire Department in Wayne County — was charged with grand larceny in the second degree after a joint investigation by the New York State Comptroller's Office under Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli and the New York State Police uncovered a four-year embezzlement scheme totaling more than $101,000. Storrs pleaded guilty on July 10, 2025, to attempted grand larceny in the second degree before Wayne County Court Judge Richard M. Healy and was sentenced on September 3, 2025, to four months of weekend jail, five years of probation, and restitution of more than $76,000 to the Marbletown Volunteer Fire Department and $25,000 to the National Union Fire Insurance Company. Between January 2020 and July 2024, Storrs exploited check-signing authority and unrestricted access to department debit cards and bank accounts to make personal retail purchases, transfer department funds directly into his own accounts, and pay off his wife Nicole's credit card bills. The scheme collapsed when a fellow department member attempted to use a department debit card for a routine purchase and the card was declined for insufficient funds — an account that should have held thousands had been quietly drained by the man entrusted to protect it.
