Around 8:30 p.m. Thursday, a police dispatch call came in for personnel down and in danger. MNPD Public Information Officer Don Aaron says the dispatch call police received was regarding an officer in trouble. It was later confirmed that the victim was not a Metro Police officer as it was first reported, but it was a security guard. Aaron says that someone had mistaken the security guard as a police officer which is why first reports called the incident an officer involved shooting. The shooting took place in the parking lot of 701 Division Street in the parking lot of Nashville's popular liquor store, Frugal MacDoogal, according to the police dispatch. According to MNPD the struggle began after a suspect attempted to shoplift at the store. The two men left the store and went out to the parking lot. The suspect left the property and went to a neighboring location before police say that the suspect returned and began to fight with the security guard. Don Aaron says that the suspect took the guard's personal gun during a struggle and used it against him. MNPD has identified the security guard who was shot and killed is Robert Scott Meek, 59, of Dickson TN. MNPD says that after allegedly shooting the security guard, the suspect went back into the liquor store taking the gun with him. Three officers with MNPD who had been working on the Entertainment District Inactive were close by and quickly arrived at McDoogal's. MNPD says the response time was three minutes. The officers encountered Meek who had been shot. At the time of their arrival he was on the ground in the parking lot being tended to by a citizen. The citizen helping Meek told officers that the suspected shooter had taken the gun used on Meek and gone into the store. Officers hurried into the building where they found the suspect at a cooler. Video footage released by MNPD early Friday morning shows the suspect at an open cooler looking in at drinks before officers tell him to "drop the gun." MNPD says that all three officers yelled repeated commands to the suspect to drop the gun and show them him hands. MNPD says that the gunman fired shots at officers who then returned fire. On recently released body camera footage gunfire is audible during the exchange between the suspect and officers. MNPD says that the suspect suffered wounds to his extremities and is being treated at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He is awake and talking. Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) special agents responded to the report of an officer-involved shooting at the 701 Division Street location and are currently on the scene of the crime. Metro Nashville Community Insight, an independent oversight body that addresses police accountability, transparency, issues policy reports and investigates Nashville police misconduct confirmed via Twitter that they were heading to the scene where the incident was reported.
