While near the 500 block of Eighteenth Avenue, he saw a white 2020 Mazda SUV run a stop sign. The car ran another stop sign at B Street shortly after. Votjko turned on his lights on Ocean Avenue to pull the vehicle over. The driver was 24-year-old Maggie Sullivan. Maggie told the officer she was driving home from her brother's house. Votjko smelled alcohol and noticed she seemed impaired. She first claimed she had one drink. Later, she admitted to having a tequila soda and a Fireball shooter. Votjko called Patrolman Kevin Poppert for help. Once Poppert arrived, Maggie stepped out for field sobriety tests. Poppert started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. Maggie showed six out of six signs of impairment. Next, she tried the Walk and Turn test. She failed to touch heel-to-toe and turned the wrong way. Finally, she tried the One Leg Stand. She did not lift her foot right and put it down too early. The officer arrested Maggie for driving under the influence. He based this on her driving, the smell of alcohol, her own words, and her failed tests. The police impounded her car for 12 hours under John's Law. Maggie went to the Belmar Police Department for processing. She agreed to a breath test after reading the standard statement. The Alcotest showed a BAC of 0.178 percent. This is more than twice the 0.08 percent legal limit. After processing, her brother signed a liability form. The police released Maggie to him. Maggie received three tickets: Operating under the influence (39:4-50) Reckless driving (39:4-97) Disregarding a stop sign (39:4-144) As of January 1, 2026, her case is still pending in Lake Como Municipal Court.
