An officer spent forty minutes refusing to leave a dying man's side. Then he was shot himself. On January 21, 2025, a woman called 911 to report her ex-husband, 70-year-old Antonio Rodrigues, forcing his way into her home in Raleigh's Renaissance Park neighborhood — in violation of an active domestic violence protective order. While she was still on the phone, he broke through a glass door with a shotgun. By the time officers arrived, he had shot her boyfriend, 73-year-old John Rowe. Officer Max Gillick pulled Rowe onto a screened-in porch and stayed with him for the next forty minutes. "Stay with us, brother," he told him. "We are going to get you out of here." Meanwhile, other officers took cover in a laundry room as Rodrigues barricaded himself in the garage. When an armored vehicle finally breached the garage door, Rodrigues came out shooting — striking Officer Gillick before other officers returned fire and killed him. This is the full body-worn camera footage from five responding officers, along with the Raleigh Police Department's own official account of what happened. ⚠️ Antonio Rodrigues died at the scene. John Rowe died at the hospital from his injuries. Officer Max Gillick was hospitalized for nearly two months and has since fully recovered. The Wake County District Attorney's Office reviewed the case and ruled the officers' use of force justified. No charges were filed. 📁 Chapters: 0:00 – Cold open 0:17 – Disclaimer 0:46 – RPD's Statement 1:18 – The Call 3:34 – Officers Respond 6:21 – Taking Cover 12:55 – The Porch 20:59 – The Armored Vehicle 22:13 – The Shootout 24:23 – Rendering Aid 25:18 – What Happened Next 25:41 – Outro 🎥 Footage: Raleigh Police Department.
