As officers arrived, the boy's stepfather, Wel Montes Rojos, claimed he had only been gone a few minutes, but witnesses reported it was at least 10, raising suspicions about his carelessness. The situation grew more alarming when the child's mother, Astred Garcia Rojos, showed up and downplayed the severity of the incident, even though her son had just been pulled from the car unconscious. The lack of urgency from both parents, compounded by a friend who admitted to knowing the child was left in danger but chose not to intervene, exposed a disturbing failure in responsibility. Both parents were arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse, a felony in Florida.
