A woman was arrested for DUI in Margate, Florida after an officer said she veered into his lane in a turn lane and nearly struck his vehicle head-on before correcting and pulling behind a shopping plaza. The officer said he observed slurred speech, glossy eyes, and smelled alcohol, and that he saw liquid and ice in the back seat along with a cup she had emptied. He said he had considered letting her park the vehicle and avoid arrest, but she refused to step out and continued reaching into the back seat after being told to stop. She was removed from the vehicle and handcuffed. She declined field sobriety exercises and repeatedly answered the breath test request by saying she would comply once her attorney arrived. The officer read Florida implied consent and recorded it as a refusal. At the station, the dispute turned to money. She stated repeatedly that she had $700 in her wallet. Officers told her the amount logged was $122 and that the count had been conducted on body camera. She accused them of taking the difference and called the officer a liar. The officer identified himself by name and badge number, told her she was welcome to file a complaint, and said the entire property intake was recorded. He also stated he earned $163,000 the previous year and asked whether she thought he would risk that over a few hundred dollars. During the booking process, officers noted that the handcuffs initially placed on her were a model their department is not permitted to use, and replaced them. She was booked into the Margate Police Department holding cell. She told officers it was her birthday and that she had never been to jail.
