On Sunday, June 23, 2024, deputies with the Flagler County Sheriff's Office were called to a home in Bunnell, Florida after a 15-month-old girl was rushed to the hospital. According to deputies, her father had rolled a marijuana joint, set it down, and stepped away to use the bathroom — and in those few moments, his 15-month-old daughter picked it up and ate most of it. The toddler began seizing and developed a distended stomach, and was taken to Wolfson Children's Hospital in Jacksonville for treatment. When deputies walked through the home, they reported finding loose marijuana within a toddler's reach, along with a small amount of mushrooms and THC wax in plain view. They also described the house itself — dog feces and urine on the floors, garbage throughout, and exposed nails and plumbing. The girl's 26-year-old father, Cody Spiegelhalter, was arrested that same afternoon and booked into the Flagler County jail on a felony charge of child neglect.
