-Tampa, FL. -August 12, 2023. Deputies from three agencies exchanged fire with a 37-year-old man early Saturday, officials said, shooting and killing him. The man had been fleeing from a domestic violence incident in which he shot his wife. The 2:45 a.m. shootout happened on Tampa’s northeast edge, near Hidden River Parkway and East Fletcher Avenue, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. It came after police pursued the man, Eric Blaszczyk, who was driving away from a violent scene in Wesley Chapel. No officers were hurt, Hillsborough Sheriff Chad Chronister said at a news conference. Pasco County deputies responded to the scene of domestic violence. The woman had visited her parents’ house in Wesley Chapel to pick up her and Blaszczyk’s child, Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco and spokesperson Amanda Hunter said. Blaszczyk shot her. The child wasn’t injured, said Hunter, who confirmed the woman and Blaszczyk were married. Nocco said the woman was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive. When Pasco deputies arrived, Blaszczyk shot at them and drove off, Nocco said. Law enforcement pursued him. Blaszczyk then crashed his car into a retention pond, Chronister said. Blaszczyk got out of his vehicle and began shooting at officers, who yelled at him to drop the gun, Chronister said. He ignored them, the sheriff said. Two Pasco deputies, a Hillsborough deputy and a Florida Highway Patrol trooper returned fire. The shootout lasted almost four minutes, Chronister said. At some point, Blaszczyk ran behind a nearby office building, the sheriff said. Deputies found him there on the ground with injuries from the shootout. He was taken to Tampa General Hospital and pronounced dead. Blaszczyk had “54 felony charges against him in his criminal history and at least 31 convictions,” according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. He spent four years in Florida State Prison for burglary, authorities said. The Hillsborough deputy who opened fire was Nathan Vandam, 31, who has been employed at the agency since 2020. He has no history of use of force. The Florida Highway Patrol trooper in the shootout was Jordan Roberts, according to spokesperson Molly Best. He has worked there for four years and “is in good standing,” Best said in an email. The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office did not release the names of its deputies, citing Marsy’s Law, an amendment to the state constitution intended to protect crime victims. The officers have been placed on paid administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates, authorities said.
