CHP officers observed a gray 2022 Toyota Tacoma weaving over the solid white line while traveling southbound on US-101 near Elk Valley Cross Road in Crescent City, California during the early morning hours of May 16, 2026. The vehicle repeatedly drifted over the lane line, prompting the officer to initiate a traffic stop. During the contact, the CHP officer observed several indicators commonly associated with alcohol impairment, including red watery eyes, slow and slurred speech, slow movements, poor coordination, and the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from both the vehicle and the driver. The driver was asked to perform a series of Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs) as part of the DUI investigation. According to the report, the driver displayed clues of impairment during the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN), One Leg Stand, and Walk-and-Turn tests, and declined to take the roadside Preliminary Alcohol Screening (PAS) test. After being arrested for suspected Driving Under the Influence, the driver chose to provide evidential breath samples at the CHP office. The results measured 0.13% BAC on the first test and 0.12% BAC on the second test. A 0.13% BAC is 0.05% over California's legal limit of 0.08%, or approximately 1.63 times the legal limit. The driver was arrested and booked into the Del Norte County Jail on the following charges: 23152(A) - DUI Alcohol/Drugs 23152(B) - DUI Alcohol W/BAC Above .08 Arresting California Highway Patrol officer involved: Officer K. Ashkraft ID - 24670 All individuals are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
