Steven Robin responded to Motel 6 in Bay St. Louis. They were responding to a call about a distressed Amy Anderson with her 8-year-old daughter asking for help. According to the investigative documents, the officers talked with Anderson for more than a half-hour — first in her motel room — before conversations at her vehicle turned deadly. Estorffe can be heard on body cam footage asking for help from Child Protective Services moments before the first shots are fired. “I know this lady needs mental help, but at the same time her child needs help as well,” he states. While still on the phone, Estorffe reacts to shouting. ”That’s when the original shots were fired, you can hear the commotion going on and he sprinted over there,” said Sean Tindell, Mississippi Public Safety Commissioner. “What happened here illustrates just what kind of heroes these two men were, just how quickly these officers can get into a bad situation and how quickly they have to react.” Within 10 seconds of Estorffe’s reaction, he, Sgt. Steven Robin and Amy Anderson all suffered fatal gunshot wounds. The investigation determined that from her SUV, Anderson first shot Robin before exchanging gunfire with Estorffe. The child wasn’t harmed. ”The concern of both officers was the safety and wellbeing of that child and obviously their intuition was correct and there’s no doubt in my mind that their efforts saved that child,” said Tindell. The child, whose name is redacted, told investigators in an interview that while attending a play at an elementary school in Ocean Springs, Anderson said she was going to shoot people she believed were there “to get them.” Less than 24 hours later in Estorffe’s body camera video, he’s heard relaying what Anderson told him. ”She’s saying people are following her and trying to kill her because she has information about a child sex ring and she is feeding this information to her daughter,” Estorffe said. “By further looking into it, this lady is irrational and unstable, and you could say pulling these ideas out of thin air.” Mississippi Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell said this tragedy presents a picture of the challenges law enforcement faces with mental health issues. Branden Estorffe and Sgt. Steven Robin’s ultimate sacrifice is a reminder of why extensive training for law enforcement is needed, but Tindell believes everyone can learn from this case. Estorffe’s body camera footage was the only video released. Robin’s body camera equipment was recharging at the time of the deadly incident.
