Authorities said Garcia died after he was shot by a deputy who responded to a call from a family member about the man experiencing a mental health crisis. The shooting occurred in the 5900 block of Sunflower Prairie Court just after midnight on April 14, 2021. A mental health unit was requested to go to the scene, but one was not available. When the deputy knocked on the door, Garcia opened the door and approached the deputy with a knife. The deputy attempted to retreat and deployed his Taser in an attempt to subdue Garcia, but the Taser was not effective and Garcia continued to pursue the deputy. The deputy then shot Garcia with his gun. The deputy called for EMS and backup deputies, who arrived shortly thereafter and rendered first aid to Garcia who died on the scene. The deputy has been placed on temporary administrative leave.
