On September 17, 2024, at approximately 9:20 PM, a backup unit responded to a traffic stop initiated by another officer. Upon arrival, the backup officer learned that the driver of a black Dodge pickup truck had stopped past the designated stop line at a traffic light. The driver was argumentative and exhibited nervous behavior, prompting the officers to place him in handcuffs for safety. Signs of impairment were observed in the driver, who did not have a valid driver's license. The driver claimed to have renewed his license online but was agitated and insisted that his passport was sufficient. During the interaction, the driver displayed glassy, bloodshot eyes and slurred speech, along with a strong odor of alcohol. Field sobriety tests were conducted, during which the driver demonstrated several indicators of impairment, including difficulty following instructions and maintaining balance. He was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) at 9:44 PM. A search of the vehicle revealed an empty whiskey bottle. The driver was transported to the detention center, where he refused to take a breath test despite being informed of the consequences. He was issued a DUI citation and another citation for refusing to sign the citation. The officer established probable cause for the DUI based on the observed behavior and circumstances.
