It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: At about 1:55 a.m. on August 17, 2021, Tampa Police Officer Gregory Barlaug spotted a red 2011 Jeep weaving down the road. It sped past the limit by more than 10 miles per hour. When the driver made a wild turn, he flipped on his lights for a stop. The Jeep eased over near Armenia Avenue North and Green Street West. He walked up and found the driver was Layla Bertoune. As they talked, he saw clear signs she might be impaired. Alcohol hung in the air around her. She mentioned heading home. Soon after, she owned up to drinking earlier that night. Sure she was driving drunk, he had her step out for sobriety checks. He began with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. Next came the Walk and Turn. Layla missed touching heel to toe on her steps. The last one was the One Leg Stand. She couldn't lift her foot the right way. With the speeding ticket, those impairment clues, her drink confession, and the botched tests, Officer Barlaug arrested her for DUI. As cuffs went on, her friend snapped at the cops before storming off. He drove Layla to Orient Road Jail for booking. She okayed a breath test there. It showed 0.133 and 0.137—way above the 0.08 limit. Cops hit her with a DUI charge under 316.193 and let her go until court. 3:04 Driving with her high beams on full time?
