A viral cellphone video showed an Iowa City police officer repeatedly striking a handcuffed woman inside a patrol car. The full police bodycam footage shows what happened moments before the controversial clip. On June 3, 2022, Iowa City Police encountered 22-year-old Daria Brown outside a downtown bar after she was reportedly denied entry because of her level of intoxication. Police said Brown became increasingly resistant as officers attempted to take her into custody. As officers tried to place Brown inside a patrol vehicle, she grabbed an officer’s Taser and refused repeated commands to release it. According to police, the officer struck Brown in the upper back until she let go. The bystander video showing those strikes spread online, but this case study examines the longer bodycam footage and the events surrounding the viral clip to provide the full context. Brown was later transported to the Johnson County Jail, where authorities reported that she continued resisting during booking and bit a sheriff’s deputy. She initially faced charges including public intoxication, interference with official acts, three counts of assault on persons in certain occupations, disarming a peace officer, and interference with official acts causing bodily injury. News reports from the time also documented prior interference-with-official-acts cases in 2018 and 2019. This case study examines publicly released police bodycam footage, dashcam video, surveillance footage, cellphone video, 911 calls, dispatch audio, witness recordings, and investigative findings, when available. Analysis and commentary are provided from the perspective of a former federal agent, former law enforcement officer, and digital forensics examiner. These case studies are designed for aspiring and current law enforcement officers, criminal justice students, attorneys, first responders, and viewers interested in public safety, tactical decision making, officer safety, legal considerations, and real-world law enforcement encounters. ⚠️ VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED ⚠️ This video contains real police bodycam footage that some viewers may find disturbing.
