On December 20, 2014, Eugene Harvey — a Delta Air Lines baggage handler and ramp agent at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in College Park, Georgia — was arrested and charged in the Northern District of Georgia with conspiring to carry a weapon on an aircraft, firearms trafficking, and entering a secure airport area in violation of federal security requirements after FBI investigators, working alongside the NYPD and the Kings County District Attorney's Office, traced a New York black-market firearms supply chain directly back to Harvey's Delta security badge. Throughout 2014, Harvey exploited a critical gap in airport security protocol — ramp workers carry credentials granting access to restricted areas without passing through TSA screening — to walk firearms past checkpoints, transfer them to a former Delta employee named Mark Quentin Henry in airport restrooms and food-court areas, and arrange each handoff by text message. Henry then concealed the weapons in carry-on luggage and flew them on commercial passenger flights to JFK and LaGuardia, where a third accomplice sold them on the black market. Harvey trafficked 135 firearms in total; the final shipment on December 10, 2014 alone contained 18 guns, seven of them loaded. After pleading guilty in December 2017 to the conspiracy count, Harvey was sentenced in July 2018 by U.S. District Judge Thomas Thrash to two and a half years in federal prison plus three years of supervised release — those loaded handguns having flown in the cabin above passengers who had no idea what was stored in the bag above their heads.
