MUNDELEIN, IL - At 7:34PM on January 21st, 2020, a driver was pulled over for improper lane usage and for having an improperly functioning taillight. Upon making contact with the suspect, the officer asked her for license and proof of insurance. The suspect continued to give the officer several other items that she found in the car and on her person. When the suspect was asked by the officer why she was giving him all of the assorted items, she stated, "I'm trying to tell you," but would not elaborate on what she meant. A beer can was also found in the front driver side door compartment. The officer accused the suspect of drinking earlier in the night to which she did not respond. After the suspect was ordered out of the vehicle, the suspect was unable to answer several basic questions and the officer to whom she was speaking told her that he could smell alcohol on her breath. The suspect admitted to having had three alcoholic beverages at her house five to six hours prior to being stopped. After being asked to perform a field sobriety test, the suspect started crying and showed concern for her juvenile daughter being arranged by the officer to be picked up by someone else. The suspect continued to be upset and was not able to speak in coherent sentences. While questioning continued, the second officer asked how much she had been drinking and she claimed that she did not know, but had been drinking at a local bar. At the start of the field sobriety test (FST), the suspect claimed that she had no medical issues that would prevent her from performing a horizontal gaze nystagmus test. The suspect was unable to smoothly track the officer's finger and had distict nystagmus when her eyes were at maximum deviation. The suspect's eyes consistently made jerking movements throughout the exercise. During the walk-and-turn test, the suspect struggled to balance in the starting position and follow instructions. The suspect began starting the test and had to be told several times to not start the test until instructed. At one point, the suspect stumbled past the shoulder and into the snow before catching herself. Once the suspect performed the test after being told to do so, she did not maintain balance without extending her arms, did not walk straight, did not touch heel to toes, and walked 11 steps forward and 14 steps back until told to stop by the officer. The officer demonstrated the one leg stand test in front of the suspect who again began the test before being told to do so. After being told to start, the suspect began the test then transitioned into performing the walk-and-turn test again. The officer asked the suspect if she knew what test she was being asked to perform. The suspect did not answer and began to perform the walk-and-turn test once again and without prompting. The officer then stopped the FST altogether and asked the suspect to perform a preliminary breath test to which she replied, "No." The officer then arrested her for driving under the influence (DUI). The officer determined that the suspect had nothing illegal in her possession after the search of the suspect's person. The suspect was later charged with several vehicle traffic law violations and aggravated DUI.
