On July 23, 2023, officers from the Elgin Police Department responded to a domestic battery call. Dispatchers advised they could hear a male, later identified as the suspect, screaming, breaking windows, and that the altercation had become physical. The female victim told officers the suspect had arrived home "highly intoxicated", shattered a glass door to get inside, pushed her twice in the chest, and threw her phone in a toilet when she called 911. While one officer spoke to the victim, others confronted the suspect outside, who was "highly uncooperative" and repeatedly ordered them off his property, telling them to "get a warrant". The suspect then escalated the situation by spraying two officers with a garden hose. When officers moved to arrest him, the suspect pushed one officer and fled, subsequently pushing another officer to the ground. An officer deployed his OC spray, and a violent struggle ensued on the ground, with the suspect punching and kicking. During the fight, the suspect grabbed an officer's holstered firearm. The officer yelled that the suspect had his gun, and the suspect replied, "I know". Officers were able to free the weapon and take the suspect into custody, charging him with Attempt to Disarm a Peace Officer and Aggravated Battery to a Peace Officer.
