He searched for the vehicle and soon spotted one matching the description, moving slowly east along Pennington Road, or Route 31. Officer Arnold activated his emergency lights, but the driver did not pull over at once. After a short pursuit, the Mazda stopped on Steinway Avenue near Pennington Road. Arnold gave dispatch his location and walked up to the driver, identified as 35-year-old Jasmina Alic. Arnold said Jasmina seemed confused and showed signs of impairment. After collecting her license, registration, and insurance information, he told her to stay inside the car while he returned to his patrol vehicle. A few minutes later, he asked her to step out. Lieutenant William Lardieri had arrived to help. Because both officers suspected she was impaired, they offered her field sobriety tests. Lieutenant Lardieri first administered the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, or HGN, test. Jasmina's eyes failed to track smoothly, but Lardieri could not complete the test because she would not cooperate. Officer Arnold then gave her the Walk and Turn test. She began by walking backward instead of following the instructions. On her second attempt, she failed to touch heel to toe and took 10 steps rather than the required nine. During the One Leg Stand, Jasmina struggled to raise her foot properly and maintain her balance. Lardieri gave her the Lack of Convergence test next and observed that her eyes did not move together as required. Slurred speech, the smell of alcohol, and Jasmina's poor performance on the tests led Arnold to arrest her for driving under the influence. Lardieri searched the Mazda and found an open vodka bottle inside the glove compartment. Under John's Law, the vehicle was impounded for a mandatory 12-hour hold. Arnold then took Jasmina to Ewing Township police headquarters for processing. At headquarters, Arnold read Jasmina her Miranda rights and the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators. She first agreed to provide breath samples. After a 20-minute observation period, Officer Robert Birchenough began the breath test. Jasmina made six attempts but could not provide enough air, so officers charged her with refusal. After processing, a family member took custody of her and signed the Potential Liability Warning form. Arnold issued summonses for driving under the influence, refusing a chemical test, reckless driving, careless driving, and possessing an open alcohol container. If you enjoyed this BodyCamBust video.
