The North Las Vegas Police Department (NLVPD) is investigating an officer-involved shooting after receiving calls about a man threatening to shoot people while wearing a Halloween mask. This all began just after 5:15 p.m. Monday evening when dispatch received a call about a man attempting to pull a gun on the caller, near Martin Luther King Boulevard and Carey Avenue. Police said the call dropped leading dispatch to try calling back but could not reach them. According to Alexander Cuevas, a public information officer for the department, police responded to the scene but were unable to locate the alleged person with a gun. Minutes later around 5:35 p.m. dispatch heard back from the caller and said the man was at a car wash business across the street. When dispatch asked why they did not answer the agency’s call back, the caller responded saying they were “trying to avoid getting shot.” The caller then added that the man was wearing a Halloween mask and was pointing a gun at him and other people, police said. Dispatch then received another call coming from a mini-mart In the area. Police said the second caller reported a man pulling a gun on customers and then walking out to the street toward the North Las Vegas Justice Center. The caller also said the suspect was wearing green shoes and green socks. Upon arrival, an officer makes contact with the suspect, who is believed to be wearing a “Michael Myers-style“ Halloween mask, in the park at the justice center. Police said multiple bystanders were nearby at the park. During the interaction with the suspect, officers repeatedly asked the suspect to stop, put his hands up and not reach for his firearm. According to NLVPD, the suspect ignored the officer’s commands and pulled a firearm from his waistband while numerous bystanders stood by in the immediate vicinity. Police said the officer fired his weapon striking the suspect. Responding officers provided lifesaving measures, however, the suspect was pronounced dead, police said. Police said the officer was not injured and is on paid administrative leave. The agency said it will release his identification in 72 hours. It is still unclear how many times the officer fired at the suspect and if the suspect was running away from the officer before shots rang out. Police said the coroner’s office will release the identity of the man killed.
