On September 16, 2025, at around 2:30 a.m., Los Angeles Police Department officers from Harbor Division responded to a robbery in progress at a convenience store on the 700 block of West Channel Street. When officers arrived, they observed 34-year-old Roger John Nielsen vandalizing the business. Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, but Nielsen armed himself with a piece of plexiglass from a damaged sign. A 40mm less-lethal round was deployed, striking Nielsen in the upper torso. Despite additional commands and attempts to gain compliance, officers eventually detained Nielsen after a brief struggle. Shortly after being taken into custody, Nielsen became unresponsive. He was transported by the Los Angeles Fire Department to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. One officer sustained a dislocated finger during the incident.
