A restaurant worker notices an eleven year old boy at a family table who is covered up, not eating, and visibly bruised on New Year's Day. She holds up two handwritten signs where only the boy can see them. He signals that he needs help. She calls police. What follows is an investigation that peels back layer after layer of prepared explanations from the stepfather until the boy finally tells the truth. He has been hit with a broom, a back scratcher, and fists. He was punched in the chest that morning. The stepfather is arrested. The mother is arrested for failure to protect. The stepfather receives a life sentence.
