Police bodycam footage from Los Angeles: a man walks out of a house with two knives and a grilling fork and charges LAPD officers after his own mother calls 911. This police bodycam footage from the LAPD Hollenbeck Division shows the 911 call, the officers' arrival, the knife charge, an officer-involved shooting and a 40mm less-lethal launcher used to end the confrontation. Real bodycam footage, no narration - the officers' own words carry the video. WHAT HAPPENED May 16, 2026, about 1:45 AM. Hollenbeck Division patrol officers respond to a radio call of an assault with a deadly weapon in progress at a residence in the 3000 block of Glenn Avenue in Los Angeles. A family member meets the officers outside and explains that 40-year-old Robert Velasquez has been in and out of a relative's house all night. While the officers are still talking with the family, Velasquez comes out of the residence armed with two knives and a grilling fork. Officers order him to drop the weapons; he does not comply, throws one knife toward the officers and keeps coming while still holding a knife and the fork. Officer Anthony Lanza fires. Velasquez falls, gets back up still armed, and a second volley is fired. He is struck but refuses to submit to arrest and starts moving toward the front door, so officers use a 40mm less-lethal launcher and take him into custody. Officers render aid until Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics arrive; Velasquez is treated at a hospital and survives. No officers or community members were injured. Two knives and a grilling fork were recovered as evidence. OUTCOME On May 19, 2026, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office filed two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer against Velasquez. LAPD's Force Investigation Division is investigating the use of force; the Chief of Police and the Board of Police Commissioners will review it.
