Two 18-year-old friends were detained by Target loss prevention after separate self-checkout transactions allegedly ended with unpaid merchandise leaving the store. One was accused of concealing items worth more than $119 inside a storage bin, while the other was accused of taking a $20 pair of slippers. Store employees also connected the first woman to a similar incident two nights earlier. During questioning, both claimed they were 17-year-old sisters who were still attending school. Deputies began checking their information and eventually determined that they were adults, were not sisters, and had provided incorrect birth dates. When one woman’s father arrived, he identified himself as an attorney and asked whether they could receive notices to appear instead of being taken to jail. The deputy declined, citing the repeated false information and Target’s decision to pursue charges. Both women were arrested over the theft allegations. Prosecutors later filed one count of petit theft involving merchandise valued between $100 and $750 against the first woman. Her bond was set at $1,000 before she was released without having to post money. She entered a not-guilty plea and was accepted into a pretrial diversion program.
