On September 13, 2023, Kathlene "Kathy" Jung — a 49-year-old Las Vegas woman who had served for years as president of the Nevada Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals — was formally found guilty of misdemeanor petty larceny by a Nevada court after entering a no-contest plea to charges brought by the Nevada Attorney General's Office stemming from the theft of nonprofit funds and the sale of a donated 2000 Ford Explorer she kept for personal profit. Jung, also identified in records under the name Kathlene T. Pullman, had concealed from the NSPCA board of directors a 2004 arrest on 63 counts of felony theft for embezzling from a prior employer, a case that resulted in a guilty plea, a suspended sentence, and $285,000 in restitution. Between 2013 and 2017, the NSPCA received approximately $10.3 million in public donations under her leadership; in 2018 alone, investigators documented more than $148,000 in debit-card charges to retailers including Michael Kors, Ulta, and the PGA store, $14,300 in petty-cash checks made payable to cash and signed only by Jung, and more than $26,000 in meals and travel representing a 3,000 percent increase over the prior year. The investigation was triggered by a multi-year inquiry from KTNV's Darcy Spears and a March 2019 formal complaint filed by board member Tina Walls. Jung was sentenced to no jail time, $3,000 in restitution, and 25 hours of community service — while the shelter's roof leaked and sewage hoses ran through the kennels animals were promised would be replaced.
