A staff report of a potentially impaired driver quickly escalates into a roadside sobriety investigation following a tip from a school across the street. Officers located a a silver 2015 Hyundai driving erratically towards a landscaping trailer and initiated a traffic stop. The driver, a white adult woman with light-brown/blonde hair wearing a purple short-sleeve top and blue jeans, informed the initial officer she was having a panic attack, yet clear indicators of impairment were observed. Due to the officer being on an extra duty assignment, backup officers were called to take over the DUI investigation, arriving shortly thereafter. The driver, visibly distraught, confirmed she had been instructed to leave the school. She was then asked to exit her vehicle to perform field sobriety exercises, initially refusing but eventually complying. During the administered Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, followed by the Walk and Turn test, the driver demonstrated significant difficulties, failing to touch heel-to-toe on each step, turning improperly, and taking an incorrect number of steps. She subsequently failed the One Leg Stand test by putting her foot down prematurely. Based on her observed erratic driving and clear inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, the driver was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. She admitted to a prior DUI arrest, and a subsequent search of her vehicle yielded six bottles of vodka. While initially refusing breath samples, she later agreed, and at the police department, her breathalyzer results indicated BAC levels of 0.311% and 0.305%, nearly four times the legal limit of 0.08%.
