-Stockton, CA. -August 02, 2023. Stockton police said they arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with a Wednesday morning shooting that injured a police sergeant. Sunthawon "Benny" Savon of Stockton was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail on charges related to carjacking, attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, fleeing from a peace officer and possession of a stolen vehicle. His first court appearance will be on Friday. In a news conference Wednesday afternoon, authorities said possibly three to four people had been detained and investigators are looking to determine whether or not they were related to the shooting and carjacking. They said there is no public safety concern at the moment. A spokesperson for the police department said all other people who were detained were released at the discretion of detectives. He also told KCRA 3 that it is too early to say if anyone else was involved. The Stockton sergeant was shot around 3:21 a.m. in the area of Gateway Court and Kentfield Road. Police told said that the sergeant was on patrol looking for a carjacking suspect in the area. The initial carjacking call came in just before 3 a.m. in the 700 block of Bedlow Drive in the northeastern part of Stockton. The suspected vehicle was located in the area of Coventry Drive and Hillsboro Way. The suspect led officers on a chase when the sergeant tried to stop the vehicle. The chase ended in the area of Gateway Court and Kentfield Road. At some point during a foot chase, the police sergeant was shot in the chest and shoulder area. The sergeant did not return fire, police said. The sergeant is in stable condition. A 69-year-old victim of the carjacking was taken to the hospital with moderate to severe injuries, police said. SWAT teams were stationed outside a home nearby where the shooting happened, and have since left the scene. Police told said that Savon was arrested by Stockton officers in January on weapons-related charges.
